New Mix is the coming together of Ellis Heights residents who understand an Asset based approach to community revitalization. Often overlooked assets are the people of a community. New Mix believes in our people; our residents. New Mix believes there is great talent in Ellis Heights and its mission is to advance and promote this talent to cultivate opportunity and excitement. New Mix is exciting. New Mix is opportunity.
Under the New Mix community initiative RHA and the Rockford Area Arts Council provide learning opportunities for residents with partner opportunities. Current Arts offerings include:
Children – What Home Means to Me
Adults – Building Your Artistic Enterprise Class & Etsy Classes
As part of NAHRO’s Housing America campaign, a poster contest is held each year for children residing in affordable housing and community developments owned or administered by NAHRO member agencies.
Posters reflect the national theme of “What Home Means to Me.” The contest is a collaborative effort of NAHRO’s chapter/state, regional, and national organizations.
National honorees are selected from chapter/state-level winning entries. Find more info here.
To participate in What Home Means to Me, send an email to info@rockfordha.org or contact your resident services coordinator and ask for program information. RHA accepts entries on an ongoing basis.
The eight-week class runs in rotation throughout the year. For information on the next class please email info@rockfordha.org.
Building an artistic enterprise requires an understanding of key business concepts. These concepts are shared through visual journaling guided by The Creative Entrepreneur written by Lisa Sonora Beam.
Visual journaling activities included:
In addition to the custom-built curriculum and the DIY Visual Guidebook, each student receives 2, one-hour one-on-one session with the facilitator at the beginning and the end of the class. These one-on-one sessions are designed to ensure students were grasping the concepts taught in class and to allow students to spend individual time working on the specifics needs of their businesses.
Craft Entrepreneurship is an educational program that equips creative people in underserved communities with the knowledge and skills to start Etsy businesses and earn supplemental income through their craft. Etsy has created a curriculum designed to be taught in person by experienced, local Etsy sellers who we train and prepare for the classroom.
Participants put their learning into action by setting up and running an Etsy shop and practice strategies for success across a variety of selling environments. If you are a “maker” and want to learn and earn from your craft please email info@rockfordha.org for information on the Etsy Craft Entrepreneurship class.
